I grew up going to the San Francisco Zoo, so I'm probably a bit biased about it. I loved going there and using my red or blue elephant key to listen to the zoo stories for the animals. Now I take my toddler and she just loves it. We have no other zoo experience to compare it too though.

The San Francisco Zoo is still trying to upgrade their habitats. Some of them are archiac concrete blocks. The poor bears are still stuck with a man-made swimming pool and a cement ground. But, other parts of the zoo are cutting edge. There is a rain forest habitat and the baby zoo is great too - lots of natural looking enclosures an a petting zoo. They have a train that goes around the zoo, which is a kid favorite, a carousel and a playground. Lots of places to eat - but beware of the seagulls - they'll snatch your hot dog if you aren't holding it tight enough.

The Zoo does special events throughout the year. Fisher Price comes every couple of months it seems and sponsors fun and games. There is also an annual Boo at the Zoo, where kids can trick or treat at various stations, enter costume contests, win prizes. There was big enflatabled slide last year. Very cool, very fun events for kids of all ages.

Parking can be tough in the area if you go late in the afternoon. Also, it's near the beach so the weather if variable and you should bring a sweater even on nice days just in case the fog rolls in.
