If you want to give your kids a bit of an unusual treat, and they are of candy-consuming age, head out to little Tokyo one weekend and check out the Nijiya Market.

I have to say, I am a sucker for "Pocky" -- mini breadlike sticks covered in different types of chocolate. Crisp and and addicting, because, well, chocolate, it is easy to snarf a box by yourself. Just don't let the kids see you do it. :) They have a huge selection of Pocky -- strawberry-flavored, dark chocolate, men's (?!), with nuts, original milk chocolate -- the list seems endless. And if your child is a savory sort, they can choose from "Pretz," savory sticks infuses with flavors such as tomato and salad.

If crunchy isn't your kid's sort of treat, wander the small store until you reach the ginormous gummy collection. Every fruit flavor there is, it seems, and for those with a bit of an oddball sense of humor (note: me), the flavor descriptions on the front are a hoot because of the interesting translations. Don't think gummy only equals fruit, however, I was adventurous on the recommendation of another patron and purchased the Hello Kitty milk gummies. (Apparently, they taste like yogurt.)

The choices don't stop there -- more interesting and unusual candies await your family's exploration. Just depends on how adventurous your sweet tooth is!

Once you're done drooling over the fun stuff, you also can peruse the large selection of organic rice (great prices) and decent selection of organic veggies. You may be able to pick up a few staples for the week's food supply.

And, once you're done acquiring the treats, there is the rest of Little Tokyo to explore!

LOVES me some pocky. Sounds like a great place - my kids would love it, as they're all about gummy anything. Hmmmm. Gives me a good idea for a Seattle review as well. :)
