What a pleasant surprise! Pulse Drumming is not a hands-off, elitist music shop -- but one that encourages exploration, touching and feeling. Perfect, perfect for kids to get comfortable with the concept of music, and drumming in particular.

The owner, Kim, is warm and welcoming, and really understands kids. She has several kids of her own, and also works with special needs children, so her experience and knowledge are invaluable. We recently signed up for a series of four "Me and My Buddy" classes, and thus far have gone to one, but if this is anything to judge by, we'll definitely sign up for another series.

My toddler is still young to really "learn" drums, she loves the beats and loves to play with the mallets and her hand drum at home. That said, Kim really worked on helping her explore sound -- high and low, loud and soft, with hand in base of drum and out of it. Kim offered a variety of instruments for the class to explore, and as I mentioned, other items on display were fine to check out, too. My little one was dancing, clapping, playing on instruments and really enjoying herself by the end of class one.

Kim also brings in another teacher, Budhi Harlow, to create magical classes like an African Safari, complete with beats and animal sounds. Perfect for many ages! Classes are an hour long, with 45 mins. of music exploration, and 15 minutes wind-down "buddy" time. $15 for drop-in, $46 for a series of four classes, I feel like this is a good deal.

If mom or dad want some good adult time, Pulse Drumming offers some excellent concerts, women's night drumming and the like. Many dads show up on Saturdays to drum, and Kim's installed a cool giraffe tent filled with toys in a secondary room for kidlets to hang out in while the pops play.
